Before you can reinsert a video, the video must be deleted. Not sure how to delete a video? See our support article here.
An insert is the term used for uploading a video file to Backstage! It is always the first item in any video's change log. The first insert is the original video delivery.
A Reinsert is just a new insert that happens any time after the initial insert. Because each Backstage delivery can only have one video file, a reinsert can only be actioned after the video is in the deleted state. Notice how the second insert in the change log shown above, is immediately after the "delete" action.
Reinserts are commonly used when:
- The video file needs to be changed (eg: to a new version with final edits before a release).
- A video has been delivered to the wrong channel, and needs to be deleted and reinserted to the new channel. (If you're looking to do this without losing views, please see the chown process).
- A video file was deleted and needs to be republished. Please note that reinserting a video does not restore the previous URL, views or comments.
- Did you accidentally delete a video, and need to undo this action? Do not reinsert. For help recovering a deleted video, please see the support article linked here.
Reinserting a video, step by step:
Before you reinsert a video, it must first be deleted. Follow steps for deleting a video here.
2. Locate your deleted video by using the "deleted" filter when searching in Backstage.
3. Visit the Video Details page. Once the video is in the "deleted" status, the "Reinsert" button will be visible where the "Publish" button once was.
4. Make any necessary changes to the video metadata before clicking "reinsert," eg: This is when you would change the channel name.
5. Click the "Reinsert" button. The below menu will then be displayed.
6. If you would like to insert the same video file as before, simply click "reinsert video," and the video will start to publish.
7. To reinsert a different video file, check the "Reinsert using new video file" box. This will bring you to the below menu:
8. Choose a video file from the sideloading menu. Not sure what sideloading is? See our Sideloading support article.
9. Once you are happy with the video file, thumbnail, and metadata click Reinsert on the top right-hand side. Ensure that the desired start date is set as well (under the Distribution Tab).
10. Once you've clicked "Reinsert," the new upload will process.
11. You can also see the new insert for this video in the changelog.
12. Once the delivery is complete, the video status will change to either Unreleased (If the video is scheduled to go live in the future) or Public if the video is due to go live right away.
