Introduction:
Asset ownership a required component of having a live and viewable video on YouTube. If ownership is not applied/removed/missing from an asset, your music video will look like this:
Ownership on the asset is applied by the Content Provider, not Vevo, and can be done in YouTube CMS. This process is entirely separate from Backstage, and requires manual action in the cases of rights transfer/catalog transfers between two content providers especially.
Ownership not only ensures a video is viewable on YouTube in the planned territories, it also ensures the video is monetized and running ads properly. When ownership of an asset changes, such as when you license content in new territories, or when the rights are transferred to another distributor, make sure your asset ownership info is updated.
The ownership information on the asset should reflect the same territory policy you've set in Vevo Backstage, and if applicable, the split rights agreement you have with other Content Providers.
When should I be editing asset ownership?
- When a video is uploaded to YouTube
- When Split Rights are actioned
- When a Rights Transfer is actioned
- When ownership is missing
What is an ownership conflict?
An Ownership Conflict happens when multiple content owners assert over 100% ownership of an asset in a specific territory. This is what an ownership conflict looks like in YouTube CMS:
It is important to resolve Ownership Conflicts ASAP to maintain your video in a good standing and a monetized state on YouTube and at Vevo.
Where can I see all of my ownership conflicts?
- Sign into YouTube CMS (Studio Content Manager)
- From the left menu, select Issues.
- Click the filter bar > select Issue type > Ownership conflict and then APPLY.
- Adjust or Remove ownership according to your rights agreement to resolve the conflict
How do I resolve an ownership conflict?
To resolve an ownership conflict, one of the Content Providers/Distributors must release their ownership in the territory(ies) that are in conflict (aka update/edit territory ownership on the asset). You can determine which CP must adjust their ownership by reviewing your rights agreement to distribute the music video.
If you need another Content Provider to release their ownership and resolve the ownership conflict, you can contact that Content Provider directly. If you don't have their contact information, please reach out to Vevo Content Ops to act as a mediator.
Where can I add/update asset ownership?
To add or update ownership on an asset, you'll need access to YouTube CMS. If you are an artist, or part of the artist management team, you'll need to contact your Content Provider to do this, as they have the required access.
Step 1: Locate the asset
Navigate to YouTube CMS>Assets via the menu on the left hand side. Search for a specific asset using the ISRC or Asset ID.
Step 2: Navigate to the Ownership & Policy tab
Step 3: Adjust your ownership
Step 4: Conflict resolved!
Once you and another Content Provider are no longer trying to "own" the same territory, the red dots will disappear and you'll no longer be in conflict!
