A video's Distribution Tab in Backstage not only controls when a video is visible and available, but also where.
In order for a VEVO video to be playable anywhere, the territory policy must be set via Backstage. When manually editing a video, the start/end date menus are not visible until a policy is set.
If you only have rights to distribute a video is specific territories, you'll need to set this specific policy in Vevo Backstage before the video is published. You may need to block your video from being viewed in specific territories, or you may have Split Rights with another distributor. As a Vevo Partner, it is your responsibility to only distribute videos in the territories for which you have rights.
In Vevo Backstage, there are two territorial policies that can be applied to a video's territories:
Monetized Policy - Should be applied to territories where you have ownership. The video will be visible/playable in those territories.
Blocked Policy - Should be applied to the territories where you do not have ownership. The video will not be playable in the designated territories. Viewers on YouTube will see a message stating "The uploader has not made this video available in your country."
Video ownership can change hands, your ownership agreement may expire, but you can adjust the monetized and blocked countries at any time during a video's lifecycle.
Reminder: In addition to setting the territory policy in Backstage, you will also have to add ownership to the asset in Youtube CMS to make the video available those territories. If ownership in YouTube CMS is missing, viewers will see the "video unavailable" message.
- Locate the video you wish to Edit in Vevo Backstage.
-
Navigate to the "Distribution" tab to find the "Territory Policies" section. If no policy is set, the page will look like this.
-

Monetize worldwide: will set all territories to "monetize." Videos with worldwide availability include certain territories not recognized by YouTube, such as Kosovo, Somaliland, and North Cyprus.Block worldwide: will set all territories to "block" - the video will not be playable in any territory.
Add monetized policy: is a blank slate for adding a specific territories to be monetized.
-
Selecting "Monetize Worldwide" or "Block Worldwide" will present you with a pop-up to make further changes.
EG: Selecting "Monetize Worldwide" will result in this pop-up, which provides you with the option of selecting territories to "Block," before publishing your update. If you own a video Worldwide except for Canada, this is a great option for easily applying this policy. The same logic applies to the "Block Worldwide" pop up.
5. Selecting "Add Monetized Policy" will present you with a menu to sort out your specific territories for a Monetized or Blocked Policy. To add territories, simply type in Alpha ISO-2 codes, the standard two-letter codes will prompt a drop down. You may also select the checkbox to "display full country names."
6. To verify your policy, you can double check your work in the summary box to the right.
7. Verify your start/end time is correct before completing your update.
Reminder: You can lock these fields to prevent feed updates from overriding the input info! Content Ops will always lock this field after a split rights update.
8. Click "Publish" to save the changes. Reminder: You can make other necessary changes on any page at this time and publish them all at once.
